Information About Ingredients in Diet Pills (3)

Here is a selection of some common ingredients used in the formulation of weight loss pills available online or from your health store. The effectiveness of these diet pills ingredients is typically judged by their success in clinical weight loss trials.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Peppermint Leaf

Peppermint leaf contains a warming oil which aids in increasing oxygen in the blood and works to clean and strengthen the entire body. It contains essential oils similar to Fennel that helps with weight reduction by suppressing your appetite. The primary function of this herb is appetite loss.

Pyruvate

Pyruvate is formed in the body during digestion of carbohydrates and protein from food. It may have a slight effect in helping you reduce weight. Found in the form of pyruvic acid, pyruvate can be found in various foods including red apples, cheese and red wine. Pyruvate appears to be safe, but claims of boosting metabolism, decreasing appetite and boosting weight reduction need further study.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Senna

Senna is a herbal laxative. It is an important ingredient in 'weight loss teas.' It works by stimulating the colon. The only weight loss that occurs due to this is water, so the main problem it can cause is severe dehydration. Drinking tea with Senna for several weeks or longer can lead to colon problems or arrhythmia. Also, some people become addicted to the tea and are unable to perform bowel movements without it.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Siberian Ginseng

An ingredient of various weight loss and sports supplements, Siberian ginseng has been studied for years by Soviet scientists. The latter have studied the effects of Panax ginseng extract, standardized to 4% ginsenosides, on the performance of athletes. One study compared 200mg/day of Panax ginseng extract in 14 highly trained male athletes versus a placebo. The ginseng group showed an increase in their maximum oxygen uptake when compared to the placebo group as well as a statistically significant improvement in recovery time and lower serum lactate values. Other studies in various groups of young athletes have shown Panax ginseng extract to provide statistically significant improvements in performance measures such as forced vital capacity and maximum breathing capacity as compared to the placebo groups. Unfortunately, the efficacy of ginseng on weight control and athletic performance is still ambivalen. For every study showing a positive benefit in terms of energy levels and/or physical or mental peformance, there is at least one other study showing no benefits. This may be because of the differences between the ginseng extracts used in various studies (non-standardized extracts with unknown quantities of active components).

--------------------------------------------------------------

Sodium Carboxymethylcellulose

This cellulose compound reduces appetite and increases feelings of satiety. Sodium carboxymethylcellulose forms a nontoxic, water-based gel that creates a sensation of fullness in the stomach before it passes through the digestive system.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Spirulina

The FDA has concluded that there is no evidence that spirulina (or phenylalanine) is effective as an appetite suppressant. Spirulina products contain no nutrients that are not readily available from food - at a much lower price. They have no proven value for treating any medical problem, and some may contain potent toxins.

Vanadium

Vanadium, or the most common supplemental form -vanadyl sulfate - is needed for cellular metabolism. It is reputed to lower appetite. Vanadium is also believed to improve insulin utilization, resulting in improved glucose tolerance. Vanadium is thought to play a role in metabolism of carbohydrates and may have functions in cholesterol metabolism. Studies of vanadyl sulfate for weight loss and exercise performance have been variable, with most showing only modest (if any) effects on body composition. Although vanadium has become a popular dietary supplement among bodybuilders, there is limited data to support claims of increased muscle mass and strength.

White Willow Bark

As a weight loss aid, white willow bark extract offers little to no benefits by itself. But in combination with other dietary supplements, (eg. citric aurantium and caffeine) white willow is thought to extend or increase the activity of several thermogenic ingredients in elevating energy expenditure and promoting fat metabolism.
