Information About New and Developing Diet Pills and Weight Loss Drugs

The Demand for Diet and Weight Loss Pills to Reduce Obesity

Demand for diet pills to treat obesity is huge with an estimated worldwide clinically obese population of over 250 million. Treatment for obesity is a serious medical need, given it's effects on co-morbidities such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure.

Diet and Weight Loss Pills Being Developed

Some advanced weight loss drugs under development are Rimonabant from Sanofi-Synthelabo, ATL 962 from Alizyme, P 57 from Phytopharm, Axokine from Regeneron, and TAK 602 from Takeda. These drugs are under phase-3 trials and likely to reach the market in the next few years.

Other Weight Loss Drugs Undergoing Research

Other new weight loss drugs in development include: Hoodia from Pfizer, Cholecystokinin (CCK) boosters (Astra Arcus, Glaxo-Wellcome), which prolongs the activity of CCK, a naturally occurring appetite suppressant. Neuropeptide Y (NYP) inhibitors (Neurogen, Pfizer, Synaptic Pharmaceuticals) block a potent chemical neurotransmitter that is an appetite stimulant. NPY inhibitors also enhance carbohydrate metabolism.

Diet Pills Research

An active Diet Pills Research program is underway to develop new agents based on the rapidly expanding knowledge of the complex mechanisms regulating body weight, like hormones, enzymes and genes. Leptin, a hormone produced by adipocytes that inhibits food intake, has undergone clinical trials and analogues are currently being developed. Other agents include amylin, melanocortin-4 receptor agonists, neuropeptide Y antagonists, 3 adrenergic agonists and glucagon-like peptide-1 agonists. As some redundancy exists in the central regulatory system controlling body weight, some agents might need to be used in combination to be effective.
