Information About Meridia Diet Pills

Brand Name: Meridia
Generic Name: Sibutramine

Meridia Diet Pills

Meridia (Sibutramine Hydrochloride Monohydrate) is one of the latest diet pills used to treat obesity and severe overweight. Typically, Meridia diet pills are prescribed to patients with a body mass index (BMI) of 30+ and this weight loss drug should be used in combination with a weight loss diet, regular exercise and other relevant lifestyle changes. More than 8.5 million patients worldwide have taken Meridia in the U.S. Over 100,000 doctors in the U.S. have prescribed it. Meridia has been approved by the FDA since 1997 and Sibutramine has been tested in over 100 clinical studies with more than 12,000 patients.

How Do Meridia Diet Pills Help Weight Loss?

Meridia (Sibutramine) is an appetite suppressant which acts on two chemicals in the brain (neurotransmitters), Serotonin and Norepinephrine, which affect mood and appetite. It is one of the few diet pills or weight loss drugs that are FDA-approved for long-term treatment of obesity. Studies have shown that Meridia (Sibutramine) can help people lose weight and maintain the loss, but weight loss tends to plateau after about a year, with a loss of about 10 percent of starting weight.

How to Take Meridia

Take as directed by your doctor. Meridia is usually taken once daily with or without food. Take each dose with a full glass of water.

Possible Side Effects of Meridia

Health side effects of taking Meridia diet pills may include restlessness or tremor, nervousness or anxiety, headache or dizziness, insomnia, dry mouth or an unpleasant taste in your mouth or constipation. Notify your doctor immediately if you experience any of these more serious side effects: an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of your throat; swelling of your lips, tongue, or face; or hives); irregular heart-beat or high blood pressure. Contact your doctor if you experience any unusual or distressing side effects.

Meridia and Other Medications

Before taking Meridia diet pills, tell your doctor about all the medicines you use, (prescription and nonprescription) especially if you take: high blood pressure medicine, MAO inhibitors (e.g., furazolidone, phenelzine, selegiline, tranylcypromine), or any other weight loss pills/medications. Tell your doctor if you are taking antidepressants, cough suppressants, lithium (Eskalith, Lithobid, Lithonate, others), and migraine medicines. Avoid "stimulant" drugs that may increase your heart rate such as decongestants or caffeine. Decongestants are typically found in cough-and-cold medicines.

Precautions When Taking Meridia

Before using Meridia diet pills, explain your medical history to your doctor. Tell him/her if you have suffered from allergies (especially drug allergies), liver or kidney disease, high blood pressure or heart disease, history of stroke or seizures, certain eating disorders (e.g., anorexia nervosa), glaucoma (narrow angle), or history of gallstones. Limit alcohol use. Meridia is not recommended for use in children or when pregnant. Discuss the health risks and benefits with your doctor.

Symptoms of Meridia Overdose

If you accidentally overdose on Meridia diet pills, contact your local hospital emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include fast heart-beat among other things.
