What is L-Carnitine? How Does it Help Weight Loss?

Classed with amino acids, L-Carnitine is a nutrient which helps the body convert fatty acids into energy. Common forms of carnitine include: L-acetylcarnitine (LAC), Acetyl-L-carnitine, L-proprionyl carnitine (LPC), L-carnitine tartrate, L-carnitine magnesium citrate. Because of Carnitine's role in fat metabolism, it is sometimes promoted as an aid to weight loss and fat-reduction, and as boost for exercise performance.

Carnitine Deficiency

A typical daily diet may contain anywhere from 5 to 100 mg of carnitine, depending upon whether the diet is plant-based or red meat-based. Unfortunately, some people cannot properly absorb this nutrient from foods that they eat. The resulting carnitine deficiency may trigger fatigue, chest pain, muscle pain, weakness, low blood pressure, and/or confusion.

Is Carnitine Helpful for Weight Loss?

Although L-carnitine is promoted as a weight loss supplement, there is no clear scientific evidence to date to show that it improves weight loss in healthy people. In a recent weight loss trial of L-Carnitine, it did not significantly alter the body weight, fat, or lean body mass of moderately overweight women subjects. Clearly more weight loss research is needed into L-Carnitine before we can gauge how effective it is for weight loss.

Other Benefits of L-Carnitine Dietary Supplements

In several studies, people who took L-carnitine supplements had a significant lowering of their total cholesterol and triglycerides, and an increase in their HDL ("good") cholesterol levels.

Does L-Carnitine Improve Athletic Performance?

We are not aware of any clinical trials that show L-Carnitine sports supplements are useful for improving exercise performance in healthy athletes.

L-Carnitine Supplements for Weight Loss - Your Choice

It seems that more weight loss studies are needed before L-Carnitine's effectiveness for weight control is established. Meantime, if you have tried and failed to lose weight with conventional weight loss programs, you may care to give L-Carnitine a try. However, for best weight loss results, remember to combine your use of L-Carnitine with a healthy diet and exercise program. Diet pills and dietary supplements are not yet a substitute for a healthy lifestyle.
