About Guar Gum Dietary Supplements
What is Guar Gum? What is Guar Gum Used
For?
Guar gum is extracted from the seed pods
of the guar tree grown in the southwestern United States. It swells when
it comes into contact with water and reportedly produces a sense of fullness
when eaten. Guar gum is commonly added to a range of low-fat foods (eg.
dressings and ice cream) to improve satiety.
Guar Gum Banned in Weight Loss Supplements
Guar gum was also a common ingredient in
over-the-counter dietary and weight loss supplements. It was typically
used as a bulking agent to increase the sense of fullness. However, in
1992 the FDA banned the use of guar gum in diet pills. Guar gum was banned
because of a number of adverse health events (eg. gastric and intestinal
blockages, vomiting, bloating) which had occurred among those who had
taken diet pills containing guar gum. So guar gum can no longer be included
in dietary or weight loss supplements.
