Information on Glucomannan Dietary SupplementsWhat is Glucomannan?Glucomannan is an indigestible vegetable fiber which comes from an Asiatic plant family known as konjac. How Does Glucomannan Help Weight Loss?Glucomannan is distinguished by the fact that it does not dissolve in water, but instead forms a thick gel when exposed to fluids. The body does not digest glucomannan, so it tends to swell in the stomach (causing a feeling of fullness) and then progresses through the intestines. Although mainly used as a laxative, glucomannan is also used in dietary weight loss supplements to reduce over-eating and assist calorie-control due to it's ability to occupy extra space in the stomach and make us feel full. Does Glucomannan Have Side Effects?Yes. Any dietary supplement which increases the amount we excrete is bound to have fecal side effects. In addition, it is vital to take plenty of fluids when using glucomannan, otherwise blockages of the stomach or intestine may occur with bloating and cramps. Lastly, it is important to talk to your doctor before taking glucomannan, as it is not recommended for certain individuals such as diabetics, women during pregnancy and others. Weight Loss Trial Involving GlucomannanAn eight-week double-blind trial was conducted to test purified glucomannan fiber as a food supplement in 20 obese subjects. Glucomannan fiber (from konjac root) or placebo was given in 1g doses (two 500 mg capsules) with 8 oz water, 1 hour before each of three meals per day. Subjects were instructed not to change their eating or exercise patterns. Results showed a significant mean weight loss (5.5 lbs) using glucomannan over an eight-week period. Serum cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol were significantly reduced (21.7 and 15.0 mg/dl respectively) in the glucomannan treated group. No adverse reactions to glucomannan were reported. Source: Walsh DE, Yaghoubian V, Behforooz A. Information About Obesity Drugs and Weight Loss Supplements |
