Diet Pills Research and OEA MoleculeDiet Pills Research Into New MoleculeDiet pills research seems to have advanced recently, as mice once again give hope to humans looking for that miracle weight-loss drug. Researchers have found that a molecule that keeps mice feeling full after a meal also seems to keep their appetites in check. The finding translates into good news for overweight people who have tried everything and are waiting for the next generation of effective diet pills. Lead researcher Jin Fu, a pharmacologist with the University of California at Irvine, has published his report in the current issue of Nature. Oleylethanolamide (OEA) - Diet Pills ResearchThe molecule, known as oleylethanolamide (OEA), occurs naturally in the blood of mice and humans, Fu writes. In normal body functions, OEA regulates several genes related to metabolism. However, researchers have not fully understood exactly how OEA regulates our eating behaviors. Short- and Long-Term Effects on MiceIn several studies, Fu discovered just how OEA produces fullness and reduces weight gain in mice. In his first study, Fu gave OEA to normal mice and mice without PPAR-alpha, a structure on the surface of cells where OEA interacts. The normal mice ate less than the mice without PPAR-alpha. In fact, OEA also seemed to keep the normal mice lean, he adds. Fu's findings suggest that OEA not only may help with weight loss but may also aid in maintaining normal weight. In a second study, Fu fed a high-fat food to both groups of mice until they got fat. Then they got OEA daily for four weeks. The normal mice ate less and gained less weight, but the mice missing PPAR-alpha had no such luck. Thus, both OEA and PPAR-alpha may be necessary for short-term control of satiety and weight, but also for long-term control as well, writes Fu. These insights into mechanisms of obesity could lead to better weight-loss drugs or other treatments, Fu concludes. Source: Fu, J. Nature, Sept. 4, 2003; vol 425: pp 90-93.
