Obese Patients Willing to Take Health
Risks of Diet Pills
The cosmetic and social implications of
obesity make obese persons more willing to accept excessive risks of weight
loss therapy if they believe the therapy will help them lose weight.
Diet Pills Worth Risking Death
A recent survey, conducted by Dr. Klein
and Dr. Robert Nease at Washington University School of Medicine, revealed
that on average obese patients would accept a 6 percent chance of immediate
death from treatment with prescription diet pills if the diet drugs in
question allowed them to achieve their desired body weight. In fact, 25
percent of patients are prepared to accept a 21 percent chance of immediate
death to reach their desired weight.
