Information About CLA: Conjugated Linoleic Acid and Weight Loss

What is Conjugated Linoleic Acid?

CLA or Conjugated Linoleic Acid, is a compound that occurs naturally in the diet, mainly in the fat of beef, turkey and dairy foods. Evidence is beginning to show that conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) can lead to increases in lean body mass and a decrease in body fat without health or side effects.

How Does CLA Work?

Discovered in 1979 by Professor Michael Pariza, conjugated linoleic acid appears to regulate enzymes in fat cells, reducing the rate at which the body deposits fat and helping to break down stored fat.

What are the Benefits of CLA?

According to researchers, conjugated linoleic acid helps to accelerate loss of body fat, supports the gain of lean muscle mass and helps to maintain muscle tissue when dieting. It is even thought possible that CLA may reduce the volume of adipocytes, or fat cells, in the body.

How Much CLA is Necessary for these Weight Control Benefits?

According to researchers, 3.4g of conjugated linoleic acid supplements is sufficient to get these beneficial effects of fat loss and lean tissue (muscle) maintenance.

What Side Effects are Caused by CLA?

In trials, so far, no special side effects have been reported.

CLA Supplements - Fat and Weight Loss Tests

Clinical trials concerning CLA's effects on fat metabolism and lean muscle gain in laboratory animals have discovered very promising results. Positive results have also been discovered on overweight humans who took CLA supplements.

  • In one weight loss study, sixty overweight subjects were randomly assigned to take either a 9-gram placebo of olive oil or various doses of conjugated linoleic acid supplements. The subjects' body fat composition was measured at the start, middle and end of the trial. The CLA group lost about 2.2 pounds, mainly from body fat. The 3.4g dose appeared to be the safest and most effective.
  • In another diet and weight loss study on humans, by researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, 80 people were placed on a diet, combined with a physical exercise program. Half received 3 grams of CLA supplements daily, while the others took a placebo of sunflower oil. After six months, all the CLA subjects had lost about 5 pounds.
  • In a study published in the International Journal of Obesity (August 2001), subjects in a double blind, randomized study were given 4.2 grams of CLA supplements per day or placebo. The CLA group experienced a decrease in abdominal fat in just a four-week period.
  • In one major trial, researchers from Norway studied a group of healthy but overweight men and women, who were given various daily doses of conjugated linoleic acid supplements. All groups showed significant reduction in body fat and increase in lean muscle, but this effect was most significant for the two latter groups.
  • In another weight loss trial, Swedish researchers studied 25 obese men aged 39-64 for four weeks and found that those taking 4.2g of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) per day showed an average loss in waist circumference of 1.4cm (9).
  • But, some weight loss studies have failed to demonstrate significant benefits of conjugated linoleic acid supplements, especially with regard to the reduction of body fat. For example, in a recent study of experienced resistance trainers taking 6g per day of conjugated linoleic acid supplements failed to find any significant beneficial changes in total body weight, or muscle/fat ratio. In another a three-month double-blind placebo-controlled weight loss study, CLA supplements failed to produce any improvement in body weight maintenance after a period of weight loss.

CLA and Weight Loss

Some of these studies show that CLA might be a promising tool for weight loss because of its ability to reduce body fat and at the same time maintain lean muscle mass. It is also thought that CLA might help weight training athletes increase lean tissue, decrease fat tissue, and improve muscle function. But we don't yet know for certain. Questions still remain about the connection between CLA and weight and fat loss, and exactly how much weight we can lose (and maintain) by taking CLA supplements.

But if you have tried and failed to lose weight with conventional weight loss diets, you may care to give conjugated linoleic acid supplements a try. However, for best weight loss results, remember to combine your use of conjugated linoleic acid supplements with a healthy diet and exercise program. Pills and dietary supplements are not yet a substitute for a healthy lifestyle.
